As NOLA Defender reported last week the gang over at Dante’s Kitchen is joining the pop-up restaurant parade. Because these guys clearly have way too much free time on their hands you can, for the foreseeable future, find them Sunday and Monday nights at Coulis (3625 Prytania) serving up piping hot bowls of handmade ramen and steaming pork buns.
As anyone who knows me will tell you, I’m stupid for any sort of broth, so we headed to Coulis Monday night to check Noodle & Pie out for outselves.
Despite their small menu there is something for everyone (as long as everyone likes ramen). You will find three options for ramen; the basic, the vegetarian and the fish. The basic, a smokey “mystery broth”, is packed with bok choy, shitake mushrooms and meat. On Monday night it happened to be Short Ribs, but if ribs aren’t enough for you, feel free to add pork belly, pork confit or oxtail to that order. In most food related instances the use of the word mystery would send me running, but this broth more then works. It’s dark, rich, slightly sweet and is a nice foil for the dense, meaty portions of pork. If fish is more your style, you’ll find miso glazed salmon filling the bowl next to your veggies. I can’t speak for the vegetarian as they were already sold out by 8pm, but there was some mention of tofu. All orders are accompanied by a variety of house made sauces, including a pretty powerful cucumber kimchi. Don’t forget to add an order of pork buns or spring rolls to your dinner. All for about $12-$15. Not a bad deal for something a little different on those late weekend and early weekday nights when many are still recovering from the weekend.
Be sure to arrive early though, the kitchen was already beginning to run out of ramen at 8pm and had been bought out of some delicious sounding spring rolls.
As for you tipplers out there, it’s BYOB, so don’t come empty handed.
